Grey Café (index)

GreyCafé

(00)

the space
in between

Somewhere between the last dark hour and the first bright one, there is a colour with no name.

We named it, then turned it into a café.

A grey stoneware cup whose steam rises into a full cumulus cloud.
(fig. 01) the in-between, served all day

Grey Café sits in the seam. Not morning, not evening. Not beginning, not ending. Just the long, undecided middle where most of a life is actually lived, and where, we have come to believe, the coffee is better.

Everything here is built on that line. The room is lit from one side only. The menu runs from first light to last. And the door is open in the hours when nobody can agree what to call the sky.

(overcast)

Grey is not the absence of colour.
It is every colour, holding its breath.

(fig. 02 — a doorway, standing open)

A tall rectangle of warm white light standing open in a dense wall of grey cloud.

One window. One counter top. Light on one side, shadow on the other.

A long café counter running the length of a dark brick room, black stools down one side, bare filament bulbs strung above it, tall windows throwing grey daylight along the other.
(fig. 03) the counter runs the length of the divide

Sit on the left if you are arriving. Sit on the right if you are leaving. Sit in the middle if you have not decided. Most people have not, and the middle seats are the ones we are proudest of.

Eleven stools, one long unbroken counter, and a window tall enough to hold whatever the weather is doing.

A café corner: a low green leather banquette along an exposed brick wall, small wooden tables, woven pendant shades and a cluster of framed pictures.
(fig. 04) the corner, most afternoons
The far end of a pale wood café counter against a brick wall, one stool beneath a single low pendant, grey daylight from a window to the left.

The door is open for most of the grey.
